Soy Beeswax

Soy Candle Wax

If you're looking for an all natural, bio-degradable , environmentally friendly candle wax, look no further--soy wax is your answer. Originally invented by Michael Richards in 1991, soy quickly became a staple in candle making.

It's cheaper than beeswax and paraffin. It's also easy to work with.

When Richards got into the field of candle making, he wanted to find a cheaper alternative to beeswax. After testing different plant waxes, he eventually created a vegetable wax made from coconut oil, hydrogenated soybean oil and palm oil. He also blended beeswax with soy wax to make a cheap natural wax candle.

In 1995, the soy candles were distributed to the public first by the body shop. Then, six years later, Cargill bought patent to Richard's creation and now they are the main manufacturers of soy wax.

Process of Soy Wax Production

The main ingredient for producing soy wax is soybean oil. You need to use about 60kg of soybeans to produce 10 kg of soybean oil. With a specialized process, soybean oil is then hydrogenated into a solid matter.

When soybean oil is hydrogenated it is not very sturdy. So, the only type of candles you are limited to are container candles. In order to form other types of candles such as: votive or pillar candles, you'll need to mix other ingredients such as paraffin or stearic acid to your soy wax so that it'll be sturdy enough to shape into those forms.

Currently, there is no regulation that dictates what the composition of soy wax should be. So, you'll have to check with your supplier to see if you really do have 100% soy wax or if it's blended with something else.

Advantages of soy wax * environmentally friendly * Last up to longer than paraffin candles up to 50% * Easy clean up with soap and water * Virtually no soot unlike paraffin candles * Fragrance is more easily distributed * Soy wax comes in flakes. Easy to scoop and melt. * Most times, you'll only need to pour once. * Great for glass jars.
