What's the best way to tile over outdoor cinder block retaining wall?
I just finished building a 40" high cinder block retaining wall and I want to tile over it with natural stone - I'm thinking slate. Can I just put a layer of thinset on it to smooth out the seams and then set the tile or should I use a backerboard? Any suggestions on material? I like the look of tumblewashed stone and might consider that over slate. Also, I like the look of some walls in my neighborhood that have intentionally uneven tile overlays - is this done by buying stone tiles with random different thicknesses or tapers? I'm thinking of using a natural stone or manufactured stone for the cap on top of the wall and just tiling the sides.
