Question for Muslims - Food?
My neighbors are Muslim and the wife has been VERY sick recently. We spoke with her husband and said that we would like to make sure we check in on her during the day while he is at work...he appreciates this as they have three children.
We have been taking some food over (I took some fresh fruit today) and the husband asked if I had any recipes as they are trying to eat healthier due to her being ill. I know Muslims do not eat pork but I wanted to see if there were any other major restrictions I was not aware of. I understand the concept of "hala" (sp?) but figure I can give them the recipe and they can get hala ingrediants if they wish. I planned to stick with vegetarian, poultry, and fish. Is beef okay or only at certain times? How about shell fish? I assume most fruits and veggies are okay.
Any advice on food so that when I put together some healthy recipes I don't commit a faux paus and offend without meaning to?

Beef and whatnot is only okay in some cases- if you buy it from the grocery store, probably not, but if it's kosher, many (but not all) Muslims will eat it.
In regards to kosher food, any food labeled 'kosher parve (most jewish owned brands will make this a prominent part of the label), given that it is not containing alcohol, should be kosher- this includes ready or easily made soups you'll find in most grocery store's kosher section.
Alcohol isn't okay- neither is jello, if you're trying to bring ' sick food '
Fish with scales is fine, no matter where you buy it from. Shrimp and the like, no.
Fruits and vegetables, rice, noodles, milk, anything else.. all fine.
Basically, nothing with alcohol or prohibited forms of meat- anything else is 100% OK.
(Hope that helps. I'm not a Muslim, but I'm from a primarily Muslim country, so I know a few things...)
