Delight the Senses: Breathe Scents to Heal Body, Mind and Soul
Smell, one of the six senses, is also the one that gives you the most long-lasting effects. Since ancient times, scents have played an important role in religious ceremonies and in everyday home rituals. The Pharaohs had used incense to placate their gods, to ward off demons, to put a favorite aroma in the air (or to get rid of bad ones!). Incense also played an important role in biblical times; its main use was in religious rites. It is still in use in many of today’s churches, especially on major holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
We have come a long way since those times. Many people enjoy putting scent in the air for the feeling it gives them and for the memories it brings. And now, with the advent of aromatherapy, we are finding that scents have the power to calm, heal, soothe and relax the body, mind and soul. Some of the essential oils used in aromatherapy also have pharmacologic properties: antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antiseptic. Essential oils can smell like an herb garden—with basil, cinnamon, lavender, peppermint and rosemary, to name a few. They can also bring to mind a citrus grove with lemon, orange and grapefruit. These are just a sampling of the Many Scents available; no matter which scent is chosen, healthy benefits abound.
Keeping all this in mind, there are a variety of products that are for use in the home or on your body. One of the items that I really think is beneficial is the fragrance lamp. This works by a complex catalytic process; simply put, negative ions are produced and released into the air, reducing damaging air-born particles such as dust, allergens and smoke. Multiple studies have shown that most of our homes have depleted negative ions in the air (from heating ducts and computer usage, to name just two). Replacing these ions conveys the favorable effects of improving mental function, promoting relaxation, and improving health by helping boost immunity. In addition to all of this, they are beautiful and produce low light, making them perfect for nightlights. By using scented fuel you perfume the air at the same time.
Having clean, fresh, wonderfully fragranced air is only part of the plan to promote a more healthful you through the sense of smell. Our physical beings need pampered also. Silky rich lotions and butters, therapeutic bath salts and massage oils are some of the ways to soften and promote great skin while allowing us to inhale our favorite scent; and just imagine yourself soaking in a luxurious bubble bath, reading by candlelight! Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
Last, but by no means least, is the candle for placing fragrance into the air. Until the advent of electricity, candles were the primary way of lighting the home. Candles have been made with many different ingredients such as oils, beeswax, tallow and paraffin. The latest ingredient for candle making is soy. I like soy candles because they burn longer, slower and cooler. Their scent lasts longer; they are nontoxic and do not produce soot, making them environmentally friendly. Candles come in all shapes and sizes and scents. It is impossible to name all the fragrance selections you can find, from aromatherapy scents, to floral and woodsy scents, exotic to designer scents. Candles are wonderful and will always have their place in society.
As you can see, the smells associated with various products, from decorative items for your home to products for bodily use, allow us to alter our physical and emotional states when they are employed. Everyone should use their sense of smell to create peace and harmony in their lives. Breathe well, live well!
