Citronella Votives

Donate citronella candles and help for the poor in DR and Haiti

Last weekend I visited my good friend Mama Luz. I had met her at my church a few months ago. She lives in the Dominican Republic as a missionary and comes to visit her daughter in Philadelphia, Pa. Shortly after the catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti, she and her daughter set off on a mission to send supplies back home to the Dominican Republic. At that point it was very difficult and dangerous to get into Haiti even if it was to bring help and supplies. It was not necessary to actually get into Haiti though, since all of the hospitals were so crowded that many Haitians were sent to hospitals in the Dominican Republic, not far from where Mama Luz lives.

When I saw the dedication she had and the determination to gather as much supplies as possible for these hurting people, I decided I wanted to help as well. Since I worked at a private school I sent out an email and put out buckets to collect non-perishable food items, first aid supplies, clothes and other much needed supplies. The parents were very helpful and wanted to lend a helping hand. I spoke to the lady at the local Curves gym as well and many of the members donated also.

It was so rewarding to load up the van with all of these gifts and send them to the DR. Their trip was in January of 2010 and they were able to take several large boxes full of generous aid. Just enough cash was donated to help cover the freight charges and they were on their way. Once the supplies reached Mama Luz's house, there were volunteers ready to divide everything into baggies so that it could be distributed throughout the streets and in the hospitals.

Since everything was so chaotic, Mama Luz did not know how she was going to get into one of the hospitals and everyone was turning her away. Then a man dressed in a white lab coat saw that Mama Luz was carrying supplies and asked her if she was a missionary. She told him that she was bringing donated items from Philadelphia and he put his arm around her and said, "Come with me." He escorted her into the hospital and gave her and her helpers passes.

Once inside the hospital they were able to pass out supplies and just be there for so many hurting and suffering people. As she passed out some baby clothes and diapers to a few women who were about to give birth, they cried and pulled at her shirt in desperation. One of them even ripped a hole in Mama Luz's shirt. Mama Luz gave them a hug, some diapers and onesies and prayed with them. They managed to smile and were so grateful.

There was a man who was very badly injured. His whole lower body had been crushed and he was in a lot of pain. Mama Luz held his hand and told him about the love of Jesus. He prayed with her and accepted Christ into his heart. Shortly thereafter he died, but he had a peace that no one could take away.

It was a very intense time and a very rewarding time. The people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic are still living in poverty and they are still recovering from this catastrophe. Mama Luz was telling me about her friend who has five children. They are afraid to leave their home for fear of contracting the dengue fever that is so prevalent there today. In doing some research I discovered that in some areas there are three times as many cases as there were last year alone and several people have died from it already. Since dengue fever is transmitted through mosquitoes, no one is really safe whether inside or outside of their home.

That gave me the idea to start a donation campaign through my candle website. I added a donate button and whoever makes a donation through that button will be giving a citronella candle, which repels mosquitoes, to a family in the Dominican Republic, and whatever is left over will go towards purchasing other much needed supplies such as diapers, medical supplies, food and clothing.

Please help me to raise funds and bring hope to the people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic by visiting my website http://naturalbeautycandles.com and clicking on the Donate a Candle button. Mama Luz is preparing for another trip and will be bringing all of the supplies with her to distribute. If you would like to get involved and volunteer, you can also contact me through the website for more information.
