How do you make plug-in air fresheners?

I love fresh, light fragrance in my home and use plug-in air freshners in almost every room. The problem is the expense! The plug-ins don't last very long and since I use them throughout my home, it gets expensive to continually replace them. I've tried both the warm oil and plastic refill varieties but nothing lasts long enough. I was wondering if it's possible to make plug-in refills? I like the "fresh linen", "spring rain", etc. scents, nothing too heavy, too spicy or too floral. Just a subtle "clean" scent, which is why candles aren't an option...well, that and the obviously fire hazzard. You can't leave candles burning 24 hours a day!

I 'stole' this idea from a friend while at her house for a new years eve party. I got some cheap small vases from 'Wally Mart'. Then I put some 'diffusers' (sticks) in the vases with some scented water from Big Lots and Marshall's. While the scent wicks up the sticks (sorry, sounds punny), it fills the room with the scent. Nothing to plug in, and if you spill a little, it doesn't really stain. I 'weaned' a friend off of incense with these.
